What Causes Walking Backward And Stares Into Empty Spaces By A Toddler?

I have a 19 month old grand daughter who does not speak one word of anything that is not gibberish. She often walks backwards, she often stops mid-stream and appears to stare into space for a few seconds. She clearly understands everything that is said to her. Her mother asked to point to me... ( where s grandma? ...trying to get her to speak my name). Instead my grand daughter took my phone, found a picture of me in my photo album and handed it to her mother (answering where s grandma?). I m concerned about the fact that she does not talk....she does not even say mommy or daddy. Are the walking backward and her frequent stares into space symptomatic of anything?

Hello,

Consult a paediatric neurologist and get evaluated. Possible causes like absent seizures or other developmental problems must be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
