What Causes Water Retention In The Body Post Withdrawal From Steroids?
Hi my mother has been taking losartan potassium for a good few years for blood pressure. She has suffered swollen feet and ankles for a similar time .she also has arthritis and gout ,she has allergy problems.she recently had about or upset stomach and stopped taking 3mg of steroids. The water retention has escalate could this be the losartan if so is there an alternative.she has had the usual blood test all clear.
Losartan does not typically cause swelling of the feet and ankles though persons react differently to medications. Another blood pressure medication, amlodipine can cause this effect. Steroids can also cause retention of fluid.
Other causes of swelling would be conditions affecting the heart, kidney or liver. Blood tests would have likely assessed the kidney and liver. It would be best to discuss her concerns about the medication with her doctor to see if any of her symptoms are related and if any changes can be made.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
