Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am eight months after having a discectomy, of my c6-c7. I have lost about 12 pounds. I am to skinny and lost my muscle mass. I am trying protein drinks, although working out is hard due to pain. What is causing this? And is the pain is going to end?
Weight loss is expected during the initially few days after cervical spine surgery(just like any other surgery) due to loss of appetite associated with stress of surgery and medication use.But after first few weeks we do not expect weight loss in a routine scenario. On the other hand in some patients whose activity is restricted post surgery , there is a chance of some weight gain due to inactivity. I am sure if you get back your appetite and have nice diet you should be able to maintain weight. Regarding pain, the pain radiating along your arms is usually the first to get relieved and the neck pain usually takes time.
Hope this helps.
All the best.Regards.
