What Causes White Spots On The Back Of The Throat?

My throat had white spots in the back. I was tested for strep but it came back negative. I ve been congested and coughing and my throat has been very phlemy. I was given Augmentin. The white spots went away the next day, but I have dark red areas on the roof of my mouth. I ve been gargling with salt water and that seems to help. I have no pain as far as my throat. My tongue got really nasty too....could this be from nasal drip?

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Redness of the roof of the mouth and along with it nasty appearrence of tongue is all due to infection in throat.

Yes, post nasal drip can cause this as post nasal drip is also an infected mucous that drains down the throat causing discomfort and infection in throat as well as back of mouth, palate and tongue.

So my suggestion is to do warm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash gargles 2-3 times a day.
Also suck throat lozenges and drink warm water
As you were given antibiotic Augmentin and the white spots resolved, you should complete the course of Augmentin for the specified time that it was given.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
