What Causes White Spots On The Inner Cheek While Using Dentures?

I have dentures for the past 3 years and have had them relined a couple of times over the past year or more and keep getting white spots on the rim and on the inside of my cheek. I really need to know what this could be since it seems two dentists that I have had look at it just say it's not cancer of the mouth but have no other answer for me.

Brief answer: LEUKOPLAKIA..

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the white spots on inner cheeks after wearing a denture can be due to excessive keratin formation known as Hyperkeratosis due to rubbing of the denture on the inner side of cheeks and the condition is known as Leukoplakia..

This can occur due to many causes but in case of denture wearers it occurs due to ill-fitting denture or due to any sharp pints on denture as the denture is not stable and causes movement leading to rubbing against the cheeks causing formation of hyperkeratotic white patches and hence Leukoplakia..

It is not cancer but a precancerous condition which if left untreated or the cause of occurrence of white patches is not removed it can cause cancer..

For evaluation and diagnosis you should consult an ORAL PATHOLOGIST who will do a thorough clinical evaluation and necessary investigations like BIOPSY to rule out the exact cause of white patches..

In case of leukoplakia the treatment to be taken is..

Intake of anti-oxidants like Lycopene for a period of atleast to 3 months..

Intake of beta-carotenes for a period of 2 to 3 months

Multivitamins one tablet daily for 2 to 3 months..

Correction of any defects like poor fitting or sharp areas etc in denture..

Reduce the duration of denture wearing and should not wear the denture at night time..

Within 2 to 3 months the patches will hopefully resolve or atleast reduce in size and severiety..

In case they are not reduces surgical treatments like Cryosurgery and Carbon Dioxide laser can be done..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
