What Causes White Spots On Tonsil?

Hi. I woke up this morning and back of my mouth felt strange didn't think nothing of it thought my throat was dry had my morning tea and when I went to move my tongue this thing was making me gag. Felt like something was stuck. So I turn the flash light on on my phone and looked and seen white dots all over them and noticed my left tonsil. Looked like this huge purple ball sticking out with a white tip. I googled what to do says to pick it with a q-tip but hurted so I didn't bother. Still there and very annoying.
