Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, My name is Natalie and I have been experiencing mucus discharge in my left eye all day. I wear glasses and have dry eyes. I use Rostasis. No relief really. The itchy feeling is still there. Could this be allergies or the pink eye? What are some over the counter treatments I can use for relief? Thank you in advance, Natalie S. YYYY@YYYY
Chronic dry eye needs alot of your patience to handle it. Restasis itself is to reduce the inflammation of eye and increase ability of tear production.
At the same time, it is advisable for you to use alot of preservative free artificial tears to stabilise your tear film which you can easily get it over the counter without prescription.
To address the itchy component, olopatadine can help to relief the allergic component of dry eyes.
In conclusion, there is no single reason/treatment for chronic dry eye as it involves multiple pathways such as inflammatory process, tear hyperosmolarity, meibomian gland disease etc etc.
With the insufficient of tear film, your eye will produce whitish mucous discharge.
Hope all these information has helped you in a way.
Thanks Natalie.
