Hello, I am Dr. Kaushik. I am a
diabetologist and preventive medicine specialist. Thanks for your concern despite being a little late. Diabetes causes several complications. The micro and macrovascular (i.e. in simplest terms involving small and large blood vessels) complications of diabetes are the most important culprit.
1. generalized swelling of whole body- most probably this is due to volume overload (if there is significant weight gain); this means the fluid consumed and absorbed by her, is not being cleared off. This may be a sign of congestive cardiac failure or diabetic kidney disease.
2. pain over limb muscles may be the idiopathic. But, again, this may be a manifestation of a vascular complication.
3. headache and chest pain- in the absence of any other disease in younger adult, they may come from so-called "gas problem". But, in an elderly diabetic patient it necessitates further investigations (e.g. ECG, TMT) to rule out ischaemic
heart disease (compromised blood supply in vessels supplying heart muscles)
4. gas problem- in females who are more than 40 (i am assuming although you have not specified the age of your mom), gas problem may be due to simple
motility disorder,
irritable bowel syndrome,
peptic ulcer disease, liver or
gall bladder problem etc. If she has been taking medication containing metformin for her diabetes, the drug is "famous" for this side effect, although being the first line drug in diabetes.
5. weakness may be due to diabetes itself or may be due to anaemia.
My recommendations- A battery of test including blood for complete haemogram, urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium,
lipid profile. ECG. TMT. after doing this investigations at the earliest, you may consult Health Care Magic or your family doctor or a specialist in medicine or a diabetologist for further opinion.
