What Causes Whooping Cough Leading To Pain And Bruise In Ribs?

Hello, I am a 42 year old female and have had a cough for over 7 weeks now. At first I was diagnosed with bronchitis, then second opinion at the hospital revealed nothing on the X-ray and I was told it was a virus. Last week I saw a third doctor and he assumed it was whooping cough as my sister and nephew were both diagnosed with it. They are feeling better but I m still coughing to the point of bruising my ribs under my breast which is very painful. Now, I am feeling a numbing pain in my right calf. Getting worried that this might be lung cancer. I had two chest X-rays done and they revealed nothing. I have been a smoker for about 25 years. Can you help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to hcm,
As your xray was normal you are unlikely to be having lung cancer. Your symptoms suggests you could be having bronchitis only as you are a smoker. Get blood eosinophil count to rule out any allergy cause for persistent cough.

Thank you
