What Causes Wine Smelling Urine?

This has happened quite a few times probably in the past 3/4 months. It comes and goes. My urine smells like wine(grapes) and sometimes I had drank wine the night before or sometimes not at all. What causes this? Or do I have something else going on that my body is trying to tell me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Welcome to HCM!
I can appreciate your concern towards the odor of the urine.
Fruity sweet smell in the urine can occur in patients suffering from urinary tract infection, patients with uncontrolled diabetes, maple syrup urine disease (very rare)

When you drink alcohol, your pancreas may stop producing insulin for a short time. Without insulin, your cells can not use the glucose you consume for energy. Then your body burns fat for energy producing ketones bodies. If your body is not producing insulin, ketone bodies will begin to build up in your bloodstream and excreted in the urine producing sweet fruity smell.

You are advised to get the lab tests like fasting blood glucose & urine analysis and consult the doctor for proper assessment and treatment.

Best regards!
