What Could Be The Brown Shadow On The Top Of The Eye?

I have just had an eye test. One of the tests was photographing my eye. There appears to be a brown shadow on the top of the white of the eye. My vision is not affected. My optician is writing to my GP for referal to hospital. Any suggestions what this could be. I was so surprised that I didn't think to ask the optician.
