Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Doctor, My son who is 2.5 years of age had typhoid 2 weeks back. Typhoid and fever is not there now. But he had rashes on his body and hence doctor advised us to take some blood tests, ESR and Xray. His ESR level is showing as 46 and Xray and all other tests are normal. What could be the cause of high ESR?
Hello and welcome to HCM, ESR stands for erythrocyte sedimentation rate. ESR is an acute phase reactant and is raised in various infections and inflammations. It is non-specific and is not specific for any infection or inflammation. The ESR rises during an infection or inflammation and comes to normal slowly. Its levels may remain high even after the infection or inflammatory process has subsided. Since, there is a history of typhoid in the recent past, it is quite clear that the ESR is raised due to prior typhoid infection. The levels will come back to normal within couple of few more days.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
