What Could Be The Large, Red, Circular Ring Under Arm Pit?

My mother is 86 years old and I noticed yesterday when she raised her left arm that she had a very large red circular ring under her left armpit. She does not use deodorant, so I am not sure what has caused this and I do not know how long she has had it. Is this serious?

Dermatologist 's  Response
hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of a fungal infection/Tinea.

If I was the treating doctor I would have suggested to use a topical antifungal cream e.g clotrimazole, twice daily for 2-4 weeks.

An Oral antifungal e.g fluconazole 150 mg once weekly for 4-6 weeks is also advisable.

regards
