What Could Cause A Back Itch Around His Upper Left Back, Closer To The Center For Over 5 Years?

My father has a back itch around his upper left back closer to the center. It’s been there for 4 or 5 years, and we’ve never really been worried about it. He says his back feels itchy and keen or like needles pinching him in that area. His doctor is suspicious it could be serious, but he wasn’t being specific.
