Hi, I've had this weird smell in my nose all day that no one else seems to be smelling. It kind of smells like bread dough when eating pizza for dinner this is all that it smelt of. Throughout the day it has been making me feel more and more nauseous. What could it be?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have constant smell of bread dough in the nose which is due to gum (periodontal) disease. The bacteria cause toxins to form in the mouth, which irritate the gums. It could be due to disturbance in olfactory sensations leading to phantosmia usually known as olfactory hallucination. It also sometimes occur due to smoking habit , olfactory nerve dysfunction , chronic acid reflux, and liver or kidney problems, allergic reaction and infection of sinus also known as sinusitis . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor will take history or may order CT scan , blood test and nasal endoscopy. For now take steam , do saline nasal rinses and avoid food like nuts and sea food. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin along with decongestants and anti inflammatory . Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist if he /she find this problem to be due to allergic reaction .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
