What Could Cause Gastro-esophageal Reflux ?

I develop a cough with phlegm immediately after eating. The problem comes and goes. I have been diagnosed with gastro-esophageal reflux, and take medication to control the problem (proton pump inhibitor). Could these problems be related. I am a 65 years old male.

Hello
Thanks for your query.
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is tough to control indeed. It requires prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors (at least 6 weeks) along with life style modification. The natural history of GERD is to come and go. Such is its nature. The only curative treatment is surgery i.e. Nissen fundoplication the success rate of which is variable. If you have very troublesome symptoms irrespective of prolonged proton pump inhibitors intake you may consult a cardio-thoracic surgeon to discuss probable benefit of surgery in your case.
Thank you.
Regards,
Dr Arnab Maji
