What Could Causes Deep Sleep After Taking Tylenol ?

Our 92 year old mother is in a deep sleep like state, then she will pop out for 30 sec - 2 min and suddenly fall back into the sleep like state from which it is impossible to arouse her. She had a bad headache last night, took Tylenol and then slept for 11 hours before our father realized that he could not wake her up. What could this be? Acc to the hospital, she has not had a stroke or major brain bleed or heart attack. Her blood pressure was high also.

Hello,

Tylenol or acetaminophen is an analgesic which reported with a not defined frequency disorientation and dizziness as adverse effects, among other effects.

At your mother's case you should control what other drugs she usually uses, that can interact with acetaminophen or have hypersomnia as adverse effect. If she have any other conditions, like for example liver failure which may be installed gradually the use of a big doses of acetaminophen may deteriorate the condition, but other symprtoms are also present like nausea, fatigue, diarrhea and fatigue.

Also you should search at your mother's house for sleeping pills because in most cases of sporadic hypersomnia, the patient has taken a sleeping pill by mistake or without telling to anyone.

If she continues sleeping even after the use off different stimuli (alarms, lights etc) you should send her to the hospital for a functional blood test and may be a toxicology screening.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
