What Could Dark Brown Stool Be Indicative Of?

My Dad was recently hospitalized for dehydration, high magnesium count of 6 and was tested for anemia his blood count was 6.9 and they were able to get it back up to 10.2. They did an Endoscopy and found ulcers in his stomach. All these thins he was treated for and now back home. After 5 days home he complained of being constipated. The Dr said it was OK to give him Milk of Magnesia to remedy the problem. When I went to check on him after using the bathroom, his stool was very loose and dark brown. Is this a common side effect or is he bleeding?

it is not side effect... it is the effect of bleeding... blood when combined to HCl changes hemoglobin to hematin + bile gives that colour... what ur doctor has give is correct... better add sucralfate syp with milk of magnesium... if it still persists go for barium enema also to rule out diverticulosis
