My 75 year old father has lost 35 lbs in the past 1 1/2 months without trying. He is down to 150 lbs. he is also confused, weak, extremely tired. He had a doctor do blood work and his psa was good. She said he have a slight uti and treated with antibiotic. He had an endoscopy yesterday and that looked good. Any ideas what we should do next. He looks an feels and feels terrible.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Chronic disease like cancer and dementia can lead to weight loss in elderly. Additionally, dementia can alter taste and smell senses, decreasing appetite. Since you have ruled out cancer, chances of dementia causing diseases like Alzheimer's should be suspected. Any history of memory loss should be ruled out.

Other chronic illnesses that can lead to weight loss include Parkinson's disease, thyroid issues, uncontrolled diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, and heart disease

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
