What Could Gasping For Air,blockage Of Saliva, Difficulty In Breathing Indicate?

I woke up panicked last night gasping for air and with a blockage of saliva down in my throat. I had to swallow a few times and cough very hard to be able to breath normally again. This has been the fifth time it has happened to me and it seems to be getting worse. It has happened in different sleeping positions and I do not have acid reflux. I dread to go to sleep tonight. What could this possibly be, should I see my doctor right away? I m 35,5 6 ,190

Hello,

Possible causes are

1. Acid reflux with aspiration.

2. Obstructive sleep apnea.

3. Bronchial asthma.

4. Heart failure.

5. Allergic bronchitis etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Use tablet pantaprazole before breakfast for one week. Getit done ECG, chest xray and polysomnography.

Elevate the head end of the bed. Avoid cool drinks and spicy food at night. If symptoms not improved please consult with your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
