What Could Itchy, Oozing, Soft To Touch Area On Head Be?

a soft to touch area on my head which only hurts when touched and is not itchy developed a few days ago. I cannot see it because of location on top back of head (tried unsuccessfully with a mirror to try to see it) but I know that it is oozing because the hair in the area is hardened and feels crusty. I want to shampoo my hair but am not sure if doing so would cause more harm and loss of hair in the area. I am a 68 year old woman who has never had any skin conditions on body or head. What do you think this is and what could have caused it? Is it seriious enough for a visit to a doctor?

Hello,

As per your case history of oozing lesion on the scalp, my treatment advice is -
1. Don't squeeze the lesion as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like Fusiderm cream twice daily on it.
3. Take an NSAID like ibuprofen for pain and swelling.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics like levofloxacin, cefadroxil, and azithromycin taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regard,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
