Hi,
Multiple bruises on the lower leg of children without a known
injury or trauma could indicate several potential causes. Some possible explanations include:
* Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP): This is a common condition in children characterized by a
rash of purple spots or bruises on the skin, typically on the lower legs and buttocks. HSP occurs when small blood vessels become inflamed and leak blood into the skin and other organs. In addition to the rash, children with HSP may have joint pain,
abdominal pain, and blood in their urine.
* Idiopathic
thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): TIt is a disorder that destroys platelets in the immune system. These platelets are needed for blood clotting. As a result, children with ITP may develop bruises,
petechiae (small red or purple spots), or purpura (larger purple spots) on the skin.
* Trauma or injury: Although your granddaughters may not recall any recent falls or injuries, it's possible that they sustained a minor bump or trauma that they may not have mentioned. Bruising can sometimes take a day or two to become visible.
* Medication: Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and blood thinners, can increase the risk of bruising.
* Other medical conditions: Less commonly, multiple bruises on the lower leg could indicate other medical conditions, such as
leukemia or
vasculitis.
It is important to have your granddaughters evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of the bruising. Depending on the suspected cause, treatment may involve observation, medication, or further testing.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
