What Could Rashes On The Neck And Inner Arms Along With Swelling In The Eyes Indicate?

My 16 year old son has had a rash on the back of his neck and inner arms for a couple of days but this morning woke up with his eye swollen, almost shut. There is no bump or discgarge in the eye, just swollen. I gave him Benedryl and Cortizone cream for the rash, he has no fever or pain, just itches. He has no allergys so was wondering what this could be. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Perhaps he has Hives. Hives usually present as welts with flare and itching. Since, the skin around the eyes is loose therefore it may swell up. Benadryl is fine but it is short acting and therefore may require repeated dosing in a day. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to give him an oral antihistamine e.g Cetirizine once a day.

If that is insufficient I would then suggest a short course of an oral steroid.

Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
