What Could Rectal Bleeding Indicate?

Hi, I am a 24 year old male, I have had a rectal bleeding for a little over a month now. It started right after me and my dad lifted a truck bed. It bled quite a bit for a while, bright red blood, and I suspected hemorrhoids so I started using preperation H cream, wipes, and suppositories. I went to my regular doctor and he looked but did not do an internal exam, (Stick a finger in for an exam, he perscribed some suppositories but my medical card would not cover them and they were going to cost $300, which I could not afford. So he gave me Proctozone-HC 2.5% cream to use. Still nothings helped...the bleeding seems to have slowed a bit but I am still concerned, can rectal bleeding from hemmorrhoids last for this long? Thank you. Very Scared

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bright red bleeding indicates that bleeding is from colon or rectum. Usual causes of continuous long bleeding may be hemorrhoids, fissure, polyps or even colorectal cancer etc. Usually external hemorrhoids can be felt by presence of a outside lump or bulge particularly during act of defecation. Similarly presence of a fissure or external hemorrhoids can be diagnosed by a doctor just on external examination or examination by anoscope.

External hemorrhoids and fissure will generally cause pain during act of defecation. If the bleeding is painless, then other causes of bleeding like internal hemorrhoids, polyps, inflammatory diseases or colorectal cancer may have to be looked for by colonoscopy to diagnose for a cause and also for the biopsy from suspected lesions. Treatment will depend upon the cause of bleeding.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
