What Could Recurring, Raised, Discolored Spot On Upper Back Indicate?

I have this spot on my upper back that is always a little raised but not painful. Every other year, thay spot suddenly turns red and dark purple as if blood was suddenly collecting under the surface of the skin. It raises more during that time and just looks gross. After a couple of days it start to disappear. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi. You need to have a scan done for that mass. An ultrasound for starters. It can be an angioma which is benign. It sounds like one with your description. Go to a surgeon to have a look at it. Avoid putting pressure on it.
