What Could Red Veins Post The Tonsil Removal Suggest?

I had both my tonsils removed a long time ago but on both sides where they were it appears milky white with dark purplish red veins all over. I have to really move my tongue over on each side to see it but i have been feeling some discomfort back there. And am worried about cancer after smoking for so many years. Just recently quit and hope it isnt too late. Should i see doctor?
