What Could Sudden Dizziness Followed By Loss Of Consciousness Indicate?
My friend is 64 . We were out to dinner. He felt nauseous, hot and dizzy. He lost consciousness and fell to the floor. When we got him up in a chair , he could not hold his head up and his tongue was curled and kind of sticking out. paramedics came , took blood ..that was good, blood pressure they said was a little low, and they could not explain why he would pass out. he had half a drink, food.... he wasnt dehydrated. what could cause him to lose control of his head as far as being able to hold it up and what could cause his toungue to curl and stick out a little?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Sudden dizziness followed by loss of consciousness could indicate a range of potential medical issues, including a heart condition, low blood sugar, dehydration, or even a neurological issue. In the case of your friend, the fact that he was feeling nauseous, hot, and dizzy, and then lost consciousness and fell to the floor, could suggest a possible episode of syncope, which is a sudden loss of consciousness caused by a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain. The curled tongue and inability to hold his head up may have been related to the loss of muscle tone that can occur during syncope.
Your friend needs to follow up with his doctor or a specialist to determine the underlying cause of this episode and to receive appropriate treatment. The paramedics' assessment that his blood pressure was a little low may suggest that there is an issue with his blood pressure regulation, which could contribute to the dizziness and loss of consciousness.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
