What Could Uncomfortable Feeling Around The Temples Post A Fall Indicate?

My aunt had fall in a grocery store and hit her head. She had a slight bump but despite the store manager s advice, she refused to get it checked out. She is 80 and also has experienced a lot of physical abuse from her ex-husband many years ago which also involved some trauma to the head. When I spoke with her last night, she said her head felt funny. Not in any particular pain but said she just didn t feel right around the temple area. I insisted once again she get it checked and of course she refuses. Now, I am worried she may be having something serious wrong with her. Any advice for this issue?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the uncomfortable feeling around temples may be related to post traumatic concussion or hematoma changes related effects. Usually minor trauma with less severe impact does resolve on its own without any intervention within a period of 3-4 days.

If the impact of trauma is significant, one may experience continuous or increasing intensity of symptoms such as:
- Nausea, vomiting
- Vertigo, spinning
- Severe throbbing headache
- Forgetfulness
- Convulsions in some cases
- Altered sensorium
- Others

If she is having any of the above, should consult her primary care physician and if not, nothing to worry , just wait and watch for time period to get it resolved on its own. Till that time, she should maintain her hydration with plenty of liquids.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
