What Could Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods Indicate?

Hi. I need help urgently. My girlfriend recently bled a pool of blood from her vaginal area, she and I are both very concerned about this as she is only suppose to start her period cycle in a weeks time, she is on birth control but she fears that it is a possible miscarriage. What are the possible causes for this bleeding so excessively?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.
I understand your concern.

Vaginal bleeding between periods is called 'inter-menstrual bleeding'. Bleeding between periods is not a normal part of the menstrual cycle. The causes could be:
1. Hormonal imbalance: Estrogen and progesterone are the two hormones that regulate your cycle and if they get out of balance, you may have spotting.
2. Birth control pills induced effects
3. Pregnancy complications in sexually active persons: like miscarriages and ectopic pregnancy can cause spotting.
4. Uterine fibroids or polyps are non cancerous growths that form in the uterus.
5. Infection of the reproductive organs.
6. Cancer of the cervix, vagina, uterus, or ovaries may cause bleeding.

To diagnose what could be the cause, she would require clinical examination and few investigations. Kindly consult Gynecologist in this regard for proper diagnosis and management.

Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
