What Do Elevated PSA Levels Indicate?

My free PSA is 16 and it was 19 in May 2017 and 16 in December 2016. My urologist is recommending a biopsy. I have had negative biopsys in 2009 and 2010 and high psa numbers the last 10 years. I also have Parkinsons since 2014. Should I have a biopsy again? I am almost 71 years old.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Incomplete data like any urinary symptoms? Normal PSA level for men aged 70 to 79 years is 0 to 5.0 ng/mL.

Besides cancer, other conditions that can raise PSA levels include benign prostatic hyperplasia, an inflamed or infected prostate, and urinary tract infection. It can also increase with prostate manipulation such as ejaculation and prostate examination.

Since, your PSA level remains high for quite sometime so the possibility of prostate cancer should be ruled out. Therefore, comply with your urologist and get the ultrasound and biopsy done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
