Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently had a physical and the blood work showed elevated liver count AST 46 and low platelets count of 105 In 2005 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma and had 6 months of ABVD chemo and am in remission. In 2008 and again in 2014 had renal cancer (different kidneys) and surgery to remove them and am cancer free. I was a 9/11 first responder and am worried that now I have something else ?
Liver enzymes may be raised because of various causes. In your case, some may be more possible, but in every case, it requires evaluation of the cause. Most common causes of such liver derangement's are alcohol, viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, drugs.
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) most commonly raised due to alcohol intake, and in case you take alcohol, you need to keep control over it. If you don't take it, you need the following tests: hepatitis virus markers, ultrasound abdomen, and HIDA scan. A lot many times, liver dysfunction is due to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). So, if you have any evidence of fatty liver in ultrasound and your other tests are negative, this rise is liver enzyme would be attributed to NAFLD. For it, you need to reduce your weight, reduce fat in the diet.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
