Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do Flatulence, Nausea And Pain After Increasing Dose Of Metformin Indicate?
On Metformin 1000 mg with dinner for a couple of years - no problem. Recently (2weeks) increased by a hospital internist to 500 mg with each meal, so 3x daily for a total of 1500 mg. After a week of explosive flatulence and burping (which I was told would pass), had an excruciating day of GI pain and nausea. Controlled by Pepto Bismol and slept for 24 hours. Dropped back to original Metformin dosage of 1000 mg at dinner, as well. Now, two days later, I am passing thick, sticky, totally black stool. What s going on? Should I be concerned?
HI Well come to HCM I really appreciate your concern, such GI symptoms could be due to Gastritis and it may be because of hyper secretion of acid and this can be managed with "Tab Omeprazole 40 mg and Domperidone 30 mg" once in day, infection need to be rule out and for that you have to get done the clinical examination, hope this information helps, take care and have a nice day.
