Hi. I have recently noticed that both of my breasts have a huge hard lump behind the nipple going all the way around the breast. I m not sure if this is something that has always been there or whether it s new. But I just wanted to check if this is normal as I don t know a lot about breast anatomy and whether breasts are meant to be soft or have a firm bit behind the nipple and around the circumference of the breast? Thanks
Fibrocystic changes can happen and it causes breast tissue to thicken, which appear as rubbery to hard consistency lumps. They are the most common cause of benign breast lumps in women ages 35 to 50 years, and such changes are seen in more than 50% of women in that age group. They are generally harmless. If you see noticeable changes in the breast like alterations in size, shape, pain, puckering and so on, you need to get your breasts examined by a doctor.
You may also require fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) investigation to know its nature. Kindly consult gynecologist in this regard.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ashakiran S
