What Do High Iron Levels In The Blood Indicate?

I have slightly high iron levels as results of my blood tests show. I have stopped eating meat and most dairy about 45 days ago, am losing weight. I am dealing with sweats that seem to come out of nowhere leaving me drenched. I was diagnosed with HEP C in 2010. Have no virus detected as of 2012. My joints are feeling stiff, I am tired ... I will be doing a genetic hemochromatosis test this week.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Iron overload (hemochromatosis) can co-exist with Chronic Hepatitis C through various mechanisms in the life cycle of the virus. Please be advised to undergo genetic testing for hemochromatosis. Management is with the use of iron chelation therapy. Use of antiviral medications to control the Hepatitis C virus is also important.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
