What Do Lumps On The Index Finger Indicate?

I have hard lumps on my index finger knuckles--probably arthritis. They are sensitive at times but not others. Is there anything I can do to short of taking any medications that will help reduce enlargement or discomfort such as foods to eat or OTC treatments?
