What Do Nightmares, Mood Swings And Depression Post Trauma Indicate?

My son was in a severe car accident a little over 6 months ago and since then he has had problems with incredibly bad mood swings , thoughts of suicide and thoughts of hurting others..he also has what I can best describe as night terrors where he relives parts of the accident and his time in the hospital especially surrounding the fact that both his lungs collapsed and he was suffocating..he almost died due to the accident. My question is this...do I need to seek help for him and if so then from what type of doctor?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Most probably it is due to post-traumatic stress. We have to rule out possible internal injuries like concussion also. If symptoms persist you can consult a neurologist and plan for an MRI scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
