What Do Pain And Burning Sensation In The Groin Area Indicate?

I have pain and burning sensation (like it’s on fire) in my left groin to the point that it brings me to my knees . It happens when I attempt any exercise. It feels better when I push on the area. I had a triple hernia surgery a year ago but am still feeling the same pain that I had before the surgery.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are a few possible causes of the symptoms you are experiencing:
- hernia can recur especially if you had to lift some weight or strain but sometimes no identifiable cause is present. It would still be better to have a visit with your doctor to rule it out or rule it in. Your doctor might ask for an ultrasound to make sure.
- tendon or muscular pain in the area if there is a strain might cause pain and this should improve with some ibuprofen 600 mg 3 times a day after food (to protect your stomach)
- herpes infection might cause intense burning there. This might happen in patients at risk of sexually transmitted infection and if herpes is the cause you might notice some small very painful water filled vesicles surrounded by redness. You will need to talk to your doctor if this happens.
- urinary stones when they care coming out can cause pain and discomfort in the groin area in that side. An ultrasound and a urinalysis might be helpful in this case and please make sure you drink plenty of water to wash out the urinary system and help the stone come out.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
