What Do Pain And Inflammation In The Hand Indicate?

I was at the ER today for a painful red swelling on my hand. The Dr. gave me CEPHALEXIN 500 MG. IN AN I. V. Also a RX for 40 tablets of this medicine /take 4 a day. I am VERY allergic to Penicillin. Should I be taking this? The Pharmasist called the ER and was told I did not have a reaction when I had the OV so I should be ok.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
probable diagnosis-steptococcal cellulitis or a boil.

start the antibiotic prescribed by your doctor.keep a watch on redness as streptococcal cellulitis can spread fast.
cephalosporins are good classs of antibiotics for such problems.
if you do not notice any improvement in your condition by 72 hours or notice any spear of redness you need to contact your treating family dr or general surgeon for further management.
hope this helps
