What Do Pain And Swelling In The Feet Indicate?

Two days ago my 49 year old friend fell from her kitchen counter and hit the corner of her island. She went to the ER and learned she bruised her kidney. She was sent home with pain medication. She is having swelling around the site and generally all over she looks puffy. Her feet hurt as they are swollen too. I ve told her to call her doctor, but I m not sure she has. What could these symptoms mean and are they life threatening?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think, your friend has developed an internal injury in the kidney and needs immediate attention. If there is a swelling around the injured site, there might have been a hematoma formation.

It can be diagnosed with the help of a CT scan. Puffiness of face and swelling over the face are indications that her kidneys are not functioning properly and she is retaining water. This may turn into life-threatening condition and she should immediately go to an ER.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
