What Do Pain And Swelling In The Ribcage Indicate?

I have been having right rib pain/discomfort for over 5 years now. I have had a CT scan, x-ray and abdominal ultrasound. Nothing turned up! My doctor recently recommended Medrol (generic, Methylpred) for 1 week for the pain. I am concerned about the side effects. He said I may be experiencing swelling of the Cartlidge between the ribs. Is this common? What can be done? I can t ride lengthy distances, sit or lay down comfortably.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Short term use of steroids is not usually associated with problems. It is long term use that can sometimes be associated with complications. Using it for a week should not cause any issues but if you are still concerned then you should speak to your doctor. You may also want to consider a neurological origin for your pain. It may the nerves in the area that are causing problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
