What Do Painful Purple Bruises Behind The Knees Indicate?

Hi, on Tuesday, i noticed a giant dark purple bruise on the back of my leg stretching form behind my knee down to my ankle. It covers half of my leg. I am unaware of doing anything that would cause any brusing, much less anything like this. There seems to be little pain and that only in one spot and a little behind my My knee. What could cause this and is it something to see my doctor about? My e-mail account is YYYY@YYYY . I am a young 80 years old. Joann Ryall

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be due to minor contusion arising due to trivial trauma. As a first line management, you can apply ice packs for symptomatic relief. Generally, it will settle by itself.

If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
