What Do Painful Sores On The Back Of The Tongue Indicate?

I have, what looks like, two sores on the back of my tongue, both sides. They hurt and have been there several days (I ve been waiting for them to go away and get better but they haven t). I don t know if it s related, but my mouth is very dry. I have not started any new medications and nothing has changed (medication wise) in over a year.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be oral thrush or fungal infection, but any signs of cold sore or any pre-malignant growth should be ruled out after getting it examined by an otolaryngologist or your primary care physician.

Meanwhile, local meconazole gels with topical steroids may be used to relieve the pain and sores. OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be helpful for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
