What Do Presence Of Calcium On Spine And Missed Cartridge Between Discs Suggest?

My husband was told that he has calcium on the spine and no cartridge between his disc. What does this mean for him as far as his quality of life and surgery. He scheduled to see a spine specialist but I would like some knowledge of what to expect. Thank you, Karen

Hi,

Your husband has calcium deposits over the bones of his spine which are in shape of thorns or spiky protrusions which in turn poke the nearby soft structure like nerves and muscles. The disc usually is a soft jelly like material which acts as a shock absorber for the spine, but in your husband case it has dried up and become brittle instead of being flexible.

These changes are common with age, compare it with wrinkles on skin, these changes are bound to happen, some get it earlier while others get it late, depending on how well you take care of it. Surgery can prevent the ultimate damage if the calcium is poking a nerve extensively, however doesn't guarantee that this will not happen again. Take care of the spine with regular exercise and correct posture for all activities to delay the ageing process.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
