What Do Prolonged, Clotty And Smelly Periods Suggest?

Hi, I m a heavy bleeder and have about 32 day cycle. My problem is that my period is lasting well over 10 days though it significantly reduces after the 5th day. I have to wear pads even on the 10th day because I might soil myself. After the 7th day I realize that the blood comes as clots and smells very unpleasant. Could there be a problem with me?

Hi! thanks for writing to HCM sharing your menstrual problems!

Your problem is typically described in the books of medicine as menometrorrhagia meaning the period is not only heavy, it is also prolonged over 5-7 days...!

The causes behind this condition are in thousands; I'm writing the common ones:

1. dysfunctional uterine bleeding

2. endometriosis/adenomyosis

3. uterine fibroids

4. endometrial polyp

5. ovarian tumors

6. endometrial infection

7. endometrial tumors

etc...

In the typical cases the patients need PAP test, hysteroscopy, ultrasound, and CA-125 tests.

regards!
