What Do Protruding Veins On The Upper Leg Indicate?
A friend has engorged veins on the back of her upper leg--also warm to the touch. She stands and walks most of the day with her job as a meal server at a retirement home. She also has scoliosis, and she often has to prop her leg up in the evening and on her days off to reduce swelling in her foot. She has had trouble with varicose veins, but this recent engorgement is more severe. Any recommendations for her? She was concerned that it might be a blood clot? Thank you.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is varicose vein and not blood clot. Varicose vein become more prominent on prolonged standing. You can do a venous doppler to confirm and to rule out blood clots. As you know the surgical correction is the only treatment available for varicose. You can opt for open surgery or newer techniques like sclerotherapy or laser abalation. As of now compression stockings provide symptomatic relief. Consult a vascular surgeon and he will direct you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
