Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Im a gay male, Ive recently had intercourse with another male, and I've notice small bumps developing on my lips & noticed my lips have been very dry... We did use protection during intercorse but not during oral... Could I have a sti or std? What should I do?
As per your complain small bumps over the lips along with chapping of lips can be due to a number of causes and in case if you had an unprotected oral sex recently it can be probably due to sexually transmitted infection caused by Herpes simplex virus 1 causing cold sores.
It can however be due to non sexual causes like bacterial infection, and allergic reaction. But for commencing an appropriate treatment a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests and microscopy of scraping from the lips can help in diagnosis and treatment will be done accordingly.
In case of viral infection antiviral medication like Acyclovir, Valacyclovir and topical antiviral ointment along with abstaining from any intimate contact with other individuals is advised as it is communicable. As of now you should apply thick coat of petroleum jelly over lips to prevent drying.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
