What Do Spotting After Discontinuing Birth Control Pills Indicate?

I have been off bc since the end of September trying to start a family. I know the body needs time to adjust to the different hormones and regulate periods. I have experienced some spotting almost monthly. Never heavy, sometimes only notice it when I wipe.I m wondering if that s normal and my body is just adjusting without bc? Can I have any chance of being pregnant and still spot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Spotting after discontinuing birth control pills with no menstrual flow may be a sign of pregnancy. I will suggest you do a pregnancy test. If negative, you see your doctor to evaluate you for a pelvic inflammatory disease and also do a pelvic ultrasound. Treatment if need be will depend on the doctor's findings.

Spotting after discontinuing birth control pills is not a well described effect.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
