What Do Swelling And Inflammation In The Feet And Ankles Indicate?

My husband just had knee replacement surgery 5 days ago. Since then, he has a severe rash, redness, swelling of feet, ankles. Could this be an allergic reaction to pain meds? Also, could this be staff infection? The redness is all over his upper thighs & buttocks as well.
