What Do Swelling And Numbness In The Lips Indicate?

HI, My lips are swollen and numb. I think I am allergic to something I came in contact with over the weekend. Swollen lips are my only symptom. I have been taking Benadryl. Should I see my DR or is it possible to treat myself without seeing a doctor? Is there an easy way to determine what caused my reaction?

Hi.

Thanks for the query

It seems that the symptoms of swelling of lips and numb feeling can be due to Allergic reaction causing Allergic Angioedema of lips.
It can be due to any food or medication while other causes can be allergic reaction to any skin cosmetic, soap, lip balm etc.
No you should not treat it at home as if even after taking anti allergic like Benadryl also the swelling is not reducing.
I would suggest you to consult a Physician and get evaluated and a clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests for allergies like RAST TEST, Patch test, Food Challenge test can help in ruling out the exact cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly.
As of now take anti allergic like Levocetrizine or Allegra.
Do cool compresses over the lips .
You can be advised injectable steroids and antihistamines to reduce swelling.

Hope this helps
