Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do The Following Blood Test Results Indicate?
I am 62 years old ,a male,gets fatgue easily, there is no weigt gain Blood test shows: Hb 11.3mg Total rbc -5.7 MCV 72.3 MCH19.8 MCHC 27.4 RED CELL DISTRIBUTION WIDTH 18.4 PLATELET DISTRIBUTION WIDTH15.9 RBCs:Moderate anisocytosis,mild poikilocytosis.Predominently microcytic,hypochromic cells with ovalocytes,elliptocytes. Serum iron74.6 (70-180) TIBC—308 (225 – 335) TRANSFERRIN SATURATION 24.22 (13—45) KFT,LFT,LIPID PROFILE ARE NORMAL TSH IS slightly raised 6.17 (.3—5.5)
The blood test shows mild anaemia, (low blood level). This may cause fatigue and easy tiredness. From the tests, it appears that it may be caused by low iron, (though it's not clearly low).
I understand you should be assessed in details for the cause of low iron which is not rare and should use iron tablets for a month and repeat the test if haemoglobin rises then use it for six months.
I would also advise repeating the TSH after few months.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
